When someone tells you that you have to die to save the people you care about, what would you do?

I'm asking this because the same question was asked of Charlie, one of the characters in the TV series LOST. It's the episode where he dived down to the Looking Glass Station to shut off the jamming device and ended up drowning. Well, he knew what was going to happen to him because Desmond told him but he bravely accepted his fate for the sake of Claire, Aaron and the rest of the plane crash survivors in the island.
