Julia Child has got to be the best chef of all time, especially when it came to a television personality. I was lucky to find her on the Direct.tv, it was one of her most earliest performances as a chef and host of a television series. It was one of her black and white episodes, back in the 1960's. I could just smell the baked french bread loaf that she was making, and it looked incredibly simple.
Flour, yeast, salt, water. That was it. A bit of kneading, a dusting of a rolling pin. She actually seemed to be very aggressive with the dough, so I when I decided to make it I was a bit more gentle. I guess it would be great if you had to take out aggression on something if you had a bad day, just smack around some bread dough in between rises.
The apartment smelled wonderful as it was baking. My husband could smell it in the hallway as he was coming home from work, and our son kept asking when the "Frenchie Bread" was going to be done. Our son is only three, but even he knew that it smelled good.
It was crusty, hot and delicous. I would venture to say it was easy to do and much tastier than the store bought brands. Very yummy!
